Gastón Pereiro helps PSV to a 1-0 win over Feyenoord
PSV recorded a 1-0 win over Eredivisie leaders Feyenoord in the first big game of the season. Gastón Pereiro scored an early goal and goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet, pulling off a string of fine saves, kept a clean sheet. PSV are now level on points with Feyenoord.
Following the defeat at sc Heerenveen, PSV head coach Phillip Cocu made a number of changes. Derrick Luckassen and Kenneth Paal were dropped to the bench and Hirving Lozano, who serves a two-match ban, watched the game from the stand.
Gastón Pereiro, Joshua Brenet and Daniel Schwaab were handed a start, while Luuk de Jong replaced Lozano to spearhead the attack.
De Jong was stretchered off the pitch on sixteen minutes’ play after Steven Berghuis had made a late challenge on the striker. Referee Bjorn Kuipers showed him a yellow card.
PSV had burst out of the blocks and only two minutes were on the clock when Gastón Pereiro gave them the lead. Jurgen Locadia sent in an inviting cross from the left and the Uruguayan unleashed a first-time shot that went into the top corner of the net. The Philips Stadion erupted.
PSV dominated first-half proceedings but Feyenoord also had their moments. Jens Toornstra saw his free kick rattle the post while at the other end Jurgen Locadia’s shot bounced off the inside of the post.
Jorrit Hendrix, Marco van Ginkel and Sam Lammers had chances but no more goals were scored in the first half. On the stroke of half-time, Feyenoord were reduced to ten men when Steven Berghuis was sent off with a second yellow card.
PSV were not the better side after the break and Jeroen Zoet made a reflex save on the hour mark to deny Eric Botteghin.
Ten minutes later, he prevented Jean-Paul Boëtius from scoring an equaliser while Jens Toornstra fired the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy.
PSV held on for a 1-0 win in a thrilling finale. They move to the top, are level on 12 points from 5 games with Feyenoord and AZ, but Feyenoord have the better goal difference.
