Jeroen Zoet helps PSV to 2-1 victory at Excelsior
PSV continued their best start to the season ever with a 2-1 win over Excelsior. They are on top of the table with 36 points from 13 games, eight points above Ajax and AZ.
Jeroen Zoet’s goalkeeping heroics between the sticks kept PSV in the game, but PSV dominated first-half proceedings and created a number of chances.
Excelsior were pinned back in their own half and Phillip Cocu’s men took the lead on thirteen minutes. Locadia delivered a cross into the box from the left wing and Jurgen Mattheij turned the ball into his own net: 0-1.
PSV came close to doubling their lead on the half-hour mark, but Locadia’s header from a corner only hit the crossbar before Isimat fired the rebound over from close range, with the goal at his mercy.
Hirving Lozano scored the second goal of the match on 41 minutes, after being set up by Santiago Arias, taking his goal tally to ten for the season.
Luuk de Jong thought he had scored PSV’s third goal one minute after the restart, but referee Jochem Kamphuis controversially ruled the goal out for handball. Koolwijk pulled one back for Excelsior on 53 minutes, unleashing a shot that left Jeroen Zoet with no chance.
Zoet made an important save to deny Stanley Elbers. PSV’s goalkeeper was in great form and pulled off a number of vital saves.
The hosts pushed forward in the closing stages in search of an equaliser and Jeroen Zoet was the hero once again when he superbly pushed away Isimat’s back header to secure a 2-1 win at Excelsior in Rotterdam on Sunday afternoon.
