PSV can lean back and relax when nearest competitors Ajax and Feyenoord lock horns on Sunday afternoon. Phillip Cocu’s men eased to a routine 2-0 win over Sparta in Rotterdam. Locadia capped his comeback from injury with a stunning opening goal.
Locadia made his first start since 28 August when he sustained a serious injury. After having been on the sidelines for many months, he was delighted to show his skills at Het Kasteel in Rotterdam during his long-awaited comeback.
Locadia had great work ethic, was all over the place and produced goal threat. He was rewarded for his resilience on 22 minutes when he opened the scoring for PSV, unleashing a vicious low left-foot long-distance shot that beat Sparta keeper Kortsmit at his near corner: 0-1.
Jorrit Hendrix was also handed a start. The midfielder got the nod above Andrés Guardado, who was on the bench, alongside Gastón Pereiro.
The two Latin Americans saw that PSV were hardly troubled by the home side that celebrated their 129th anniversary. Phillip Cocu’s team pressed the ball high up the pitch and Marco van Ginkel doubled the lead on 42 minutes.
Sparta could never stage a comeback. PSV took their foot off the pedal after the break but kept focused on winning the game. Kortsmit was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers and saved twice from Locadia, while also denying Jetro Willems.
PSV move into second place, following the 2-0 win Rotterdam and have put pressure on Ajax and Feyenoord who will meet for a massive game in the Amsterdam ArenA on Sunday afternoon at 14.30.
