Luuk de Jong hits winner against Sparta Rotterdam
PSV earned their tenth consecutive win of the season, thanks to a goal from substitute Luuk de Jong, who helped his side to a 1-0 victory against Sparta Rotterdam.
Phillip Cocu’s side had the better of the opening exchanges and created four chances inside fifteen minutes. Jorrit Hendrix saw a shot cleared off the line, while Sparta keeper Roy Kortsmit made a reflex save to deny Jürgen Locadia.
Bergwijn, who got the nod ahead of Luuk de Jong, was presented with a clear shooting chance on 29 minutes, but miscued his effort under pressure of a Sparta defender
The visitors also had their moments. Duarte and Floranus tried their luck from long range but Jeroen Zoet made a double save to keep PSV in the game.
So it was still goalless at half time and Cocu made one change replacing Steven Bergwijn, who had been shown a yellow card on 31 minutes, by Luuk de Jong. The substitution almost immediately paid dividends.
Luuk de Jong finally broke the deadlock seven minutes into the second half, tapping home Joshua Brenet’s low cross, leaving Kortsmit with no chance 1-0.
Gastón Pereiro had a great opportunity to head home PSV’s second goal of the match but again Kortsmit pulled off a save, while captain Marco van Ginkel saw his curling effort from 20 yards out come back off the crossbar.
PSV earned a 1-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam, one week before they travel to Amsterdam to face Ajax. PSV have opened up a ten-point lead over Ajax, while AZ climbed into second place, eight points behind leaders PSV
