Luuk de Jong’s 100th Eredivisie goal earns PSV a late win
Luuk de Jong’s 100th Eredivisie strike in the dying seconds proved decisive as PSV recorded a narrow but crucial 2-1 win over Heracles Almelo at the Polman Stadion on Sunday afternoon.
PSV, who were without Marco van Ginkel, dominated the early opening exchanges. Luuk de Jong (header), Steven Bergwijn ( long-range effort) and Mauro Junior, who made his PSV debut, had chances to open the scoring.
But Heracles Almelo goalkeeper Bram Castro pulled off saves to deny the PSV forwards. Hirving Lozano was played clean through but one-on-one with Castro, there was some contact and the Mexican lost his balance.
Jeroen Zoet was called into the action for the first time on the half-hour mark. He made a full-length save from a long range, goal-bound Petterson shot, stretching at full length to palm away his effort for a corner.
The deserved breakthrough came seconds before the half-time whistle. Luuk de Jong’s, completely left unmarked at the second post, headed Hirving Lozano’s free kick into the path of Steven Bergwijn who simply tapped home the opener: 0-1
The hosts restored parity in the 66th minute. Referee Ed Janssen pointed to the spot after Santiago Aria had held Darri. Jeff Hardeveld converted the spot kick, sending Jeroen Zoet the wrong way: 1-1.
PSV were close to taking the lead again on 79 minutes. Joshua Brenet sent in an inviting cross but Luuk de Jong headed the ball straight at Castro. But De Jong sent the travelling fans into raptures. Substitute Albert Gudmundsson provided the assist and De Jong slotted home the winner: 1-2.
