Narrow win sets up a new club record
PSV set a new club record of 22 consecutive home wins in the Dutch top flight, following a narrow 1-0 victory over Excelsior in a freezing Philips Stadion on Wednesday evening.
The first chance of the game for PSV arrived on five minutes when Hirving Lozano had an effort blocked. Excelsior came even closer two minutes when Mike van Duinen rattled the bar.
The deadlock was broken on seventeen minutes. Luuk de Jong delivered a sweet backheel pass and Hirving Lozano slotted home. PSV grew into the game and asked questions of the Excelsior defence.
Phillip Cocu’s side were fully in control but failed to double their advantage. Steven Bergwijn saw his shot smothered, while Excelsior keeper Theo Zwarthoed pulled off a reflex save to deny Luuk de Jong.
Excelsior were well-organised after the break and PSV struggled to slice open their solid and compact defence. Luuk de Jong had a chance on 72 minutes but Zwarthoed comfortably gathered his effort.
PSV failed to create any chances of note. Lozano was a threat to the Excelsior defenders but the Mexican could not kill off the game, either. Excelsior went in search of an equaliser but PSV held out for the win.
