PSV head coach Phillip Cocu decided to drop Luuk de Jong to the bench. PSV’s captain had scored a goal for PSV in the 3-1 over ADO Den Haag in this season’s corresponding fixture in the Philips Stadion.
Pereiro partnered Locadia up front with Siem de Jong and Van Ginkel playing supportive roles. The game plan proved to be effective in the opening exchanges of the game.
PSV were all over the park in the first fifteen minutes and made the breakthrough on just seven minutes, when Davy Pröpper got his name on the score sheet.
A superb, well-worked move, involving four players, was finished off by Davy Pröpper. Locadia turned provider for the midfielder who smashed the ball home: 0-1.
ADO were hanging in the ropes. ‘Close them down’, chanted the home fans but the hosts were helpless. PSV failed to double the lead. Andres Guardado came close but hit his shot the wrong side of the post.
PSV put in a poor second-half display and were lucky to be still a goal up on the hour mark. Havenaar had a great goal scoring opportunity but Jeroen Zoet pulled off a save to deny him.
PSV omitted to kill off the game, wasting some gilt-edged chances and were made to rue the missed chances when Havenaar nodded on a rebound in the 87th minute.
