PSV knocked out of KNVB Cup by Feyenoord
PSV did not progress to the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup, following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Feyenoord in De Kuip on Wednesday night. Phillip’s Cocu side lacked luck but also sharpness in front of goal.
With just three minutes gone, Sam Larson put Feyenoord ahead. A shot from Steven Berghuis was saved by Jeroen Zoet, but the Swede pounced on the rebound to open the scoring for the hosts: 1-0.
PSV went in search of an equaliser. Hirving Lozano sent an effort just wide. Jorrit Hendrix put a long-distance shot the wrong side of the post and Lozano came close but Malacia made a professional foul to stop the Mexican.
Feyenoord doubled their lead on 36 minutes. They won a penalty that should not have been given. The ball fell to Tonny Vilhena whose shot took a slight deflection and Jeroen Zoet was powerless to stop the ball sailing into the net: 2-0.
Jorgensen thought he had put the game to bed on 59 minutes with a superb volley but the video referee disallowed the Dane’s goal for offside.
PSV came close to reducing the deficit twice. Feyenoord goalie Brad Jones pulled off a fine save to deny Gastón Pereiro and Hirving Lozano’s effort whizzed wide across the goalmouth. Mauro Junior hit the bar from a free kick.
Luck was not on PSV’s side. Marco van Ginkel, Sam Lammers and Steven Bergwijn came in off the bench but they could not prevent defeat and elimination from the KNVB Cup.
