PSV overwhelm Ajax 3-0
PSV maintained their 100% start to the 2018/19 season with a convincing and fully deserved 3-0 victory against nearest competitors Ajax in the Philips Stadion on Sunday afternoon.
PSV were all over the place in the first half, showing pace and fighting spirit from the start. Van Bommel’s team pressed high up the pitch, which soon paid off.
35 minutes were on the clock when PSV had taken a 3-0 lead. Van Bommel, in charge of PSV as head coach, had never before seen his side take a three-goal advantage so soon in his debut year.
Pereiro opening the scoring on 21 minutes from the rebound. Three minutes later, De Jong capitalised on some chaos in the Ajax defence to double PSV’s lead and Lozano made it three with a simple tap-in from close range in the 35th minute: 3-0.
PSV took their feet off the pedal in the second half, after Ajax coach Ten Hag had made a double substitution at half time in an attempt to salvage some pride.
But the visitors never found their rhythm. PSV put in a solid defensive display to keep the Ajax attack at bay. Van Bommel’s men have made it six wins out of six and have widened the gap at the top. PSV have 18 points from six games, while Ajax are second with 13 points.
