Terug in de Champions League
PSV return to the Champions League after they cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over BATE Borisov in the Philips Stadion on Wednesday night. Mark van Bommel’s side , 6-2 winners on aggregate, reach the group stage for the sixteenth time.
PSV were looking on the bright side of life after a fine first-half performance in the wet Philips Stadion. After a tentative opening spell, they looked sharp and fresh and the first chance of the game fell to PSV on five minutes.
Hirving Lozano curled a free kick against the bar, while Gaston Pereiro, who constantly played between the lines in the first period, forced keeper Scherbitski into a save one minute later.
The deadlock was broken on fourteen minutes. Denzel Dumfries’ throw-in was flicked on by Luuk de Jong to Steven Bergwijn. The agile forward rounded his marker before calmly slotting home the opening goal: 1-0.
PSV were fully in control and doubled their lead on 36 minutes. Jorrit Hendrix delivered a brilliant cross and captain Luuk de Jong rose high above his man to head home: 2-0.
Hirving Lozano scored a superb goal in the 62nd minute, sending the PSV fans into raptures. The Mexican wriggled his way past some defenders and his finish was impeccable, as PSV will go into Thursday’s group stage draw.
