PSV secure a 2-0 win over FC Volendam in extra time
PSV have reached the Round of 16 of the KNVB Beker after a 2-0 win at FC Volendam. The goals were scored in extra time. Marco van Ginkel came off the bench to net a stunning opening goal and Hirving Lozano doubled the lead in the 120th minute.
PSV knew exactly what they had to do when they got the game under way in the Kras Stadion. The home side were content to sit deep and defend and PSV would have to find a way to break down their packed defence.
Phillip Cocu’s team played at a slow pace and hardly created chances against the well-organised, defensive minded hosts. They tried their luck from long range but failed to impress in the first half.
PSV’s head coach Phillip Cocu, who was visibly not amused, issued tactical instructions on the touchline and PSV even survived a scare when Doodeman sent a free header wide of the post.
FC Volendam did not create any more danger but PSV were also unable to break down the home side’s backline in the second period and turn their dominance into goals.
Lozano was involved in many moves but, just like Maher and substitute Mauro Junior, he could not find the back of the net. Moreover, FC Volendam goalkeeper Verhulst pulled off fine save to keep his side in the game. And so the match went into extra time.
Substitute Van Ginkel came again to the rescue and spared PSV’s blushes. He broke the deadlock on 107 minutes with a stunning turn and strike and Lozano doubled the lead in the final minute of extra time. Final score: 0-2
