PSV throw away victory in Groningen
PSV threw away a 3-1 lead at FC Groningen as they conceded a late-gasp goal. Te Wierik’s 94th-minute strike sent the home fans into raptures and piled more misery on Phillip Cocu’s side.
Following the defeat at Ajax last Sunday, Cocu made some changes, handing a start to De Jong, Bergwijn and Ramselaar, with Luckassen and Pereiro dropping to the bench.
Luuk de Jong replaced Locadia, who has picked up a hamstring injury. PSV came flying out of the blocks in Groningen and took a 2-0 lead within sixteen minutes.
Marco van Ginkel opened the scoring for PSV on seven minutes with a long-range strike and Bart Ramselaar, following a well-worked move, doubled PSV’s lead in the 16th minute.
FC Groningen pulled a goal back on 31 minutes when Yoëll Van Nieff superbly curled a free kick past Jeroen Zoet, but van Ginkel restored a two goal advantage for PSV on 37 minutes.
Hirving Lozano was brought down in the box and referee Bas Nijhuis pointed to the spot. Captain Marco van Ginkel duly converted the spot kick: 1-3
FC Groningen were awarded a penalty eight minutes into the second half for handball by Van Ginkel. Substitute Lars Veldwijk stepped up to slot home the penalty: 2-3.
The second half developed into an intense and end-to-end affair and both teams had chances. Mike te Wierik gifted the hosts a 94th-minute equaliser in the Nordlease Stadion on Wednesday night.
